It’s economical and versatile; a cut of meat that goes farther than almost any other.
After the initial meal, additional meals can be enjoyed with the remaining ham. And finally, you can put the ham bone, with meat still on it, in the crock-pot with dried beans and you’ve got one last meal! This delicious southern treat is served with hot cornbread. Below, you’ll find our cooking directions for a perfect, juicy ham and suggestions for side dishes.
Cooking Directions for Baked Ham
Choose a Gwaltney, (if possible) Smoked Ham, Butt Portion, Ready-To-Cook. This is just our favorite.
If you can’t find this brand, use
Preheat the oven to 350º. Remove packaging and place hamfat side up in a 2-inch deep roasting pan. We find the broiler pan is just the right size. Put the ham directly in the pan. Add 1 cup water to the pan and cover tightly with foil.(important). Bake ham until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham, not touching the bone, reads 148º. We find that about 17 minutes per pound is perfect. Just be sure and stop cooking it when the thermometer reaches 148º, otherwise it will be too dry. Let ham rest 5 minutes before slicing

Breads: Favorite Southern Cornbread*, Sour Cream Biscuits*, Easy Cheese Biscuits*, Muffins
