A kitchen timer…
why do I need one?  If you don’t already use a timer and you do much cooking and baking, buy one!  It will become your best friend.  If you get distracted, the phone rings, someone comes to the door, your timer can save the day.
Buy Fresher Bread


Have you noticed the different color ties on the loaves of bread? They denote the day the bread is baked & delivered to the store.

It really works! Here’s the schedule:

Monday, blue, Tuesday, green, None on Wednesday, Thursday, Red, Friday, white and Saturday, yellow.
We checked it out on Friday, squeezing the loaf with the white tie and other loaves with colored ties. The white was much softer compared to the others. This code is universal, not for just one particular grocery chain.

”Who Wants Dessert?”….How many times have you said, “I do!

Summer is gone and we don’t have to watch our waist as much (thank goodness) and we can have as much dessert as we want!!!! …Right? If you love apples as much as we do, you’ll love my “Grandmother Nitz’ German Apple Cake” (shown).  Full of chunks of freshly chopped apples and Georgia pecans, it develops a macaroon-like top as it bakes. It’s one of my favorite fall cakes with a scoop of buttered pecan ice cream!  The words Apple Fritters just cry out “Fall and Leaves” and all the yummy treats that go with the season. These are great for breakfast or an afternoon snack with hot spiced tea or coffee.

Grandmother Nitz’ German Apple Cake

Your house will smell heavenly!


2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1 cup vegetable or olive oil

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups granulated sugar

2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. cinnamon

4 cups peeled and finely chopped apples (see *) 2 large apples will be 4 cups

1 cup chopped pecans


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In mixer bowl on low speed, combine the eggs, oil, vanilla, mixing well. Slowly add sugar until mixture is thick and creamy. Sift the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon together and add to creamed mixture in bowl. (I like to stir this in first, so the flour doesn’t fly everywhere). * (I peel, core and cut the apples in quarters and pulse them in the food processor , in 2 batches, so they’re all perfect, the same size and I don’t have to chop them) Fold in chopped apples and pecans by hand. Spoon into a greased & floured 9x13-inch baking dish and bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean. Cool on wire cake cooling rack. Serve warm or cool. Cut in 12 squares (3 across & 4 down)  or 16 squares.(4 across & 4 down).
Note: Delicious served with a dollop of Cool Whip on top. Also the moisture from the apples make the cake more moist the next day.

Apple Fritters


What is a “fritter”?…To all of us Southerners, it basically is a sweet “hushpuppy!!  It’s cut up fruit in a sweet batter, fried, and usually rolled in powdered sugar.


3 cups apples, peeled and finely chopped (about 1½ lbs. or 3 apples)

1½ cups plain flour

2 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. granulated sugar

2 eggs, beaten

½ cup whole milk

1 Tbsp. vegetable oil

Powdered sugar with a little cinnamon added


Prepare the apples, measure 3 cups and set aside. Sift together the flour,  baking powder, salt and sugar. Add the eggs, milk, oil and apples. Stir just until moistened. (I like to use a rubber spatula). Using about 2 Tablespoonful measures, drop in hot oil. Just like hush puppies, fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels and while still hot drop into the powdered sugar (with a little cinnamon added) , shake bag and place on a plate. (I like to put my powdered sugar in a paper lunch bag).  Makes about 3 dozen fritters.
